About Barcelona And How To Prepare For Your Trip

Our team has been to Barcelona many times and learned a lot about this city. This is why we decided to provide you with some valuable information about your unforgettable Barcelona experience!

So, what is the city known for? Well, Barcelona is a city mostly known for its famous architecture & buildings, delicious food, football, and beaches!

Here are a few things we discovered during our trips:

The currency used in Barcelona, Spain is Euro (€). Most of the restaurants or ATMs accept foreign cards, so no need to worry about running out of cash. If you´re concerned that your card may not work, contact your bank in advance and have them enable it for Europe.

In addition to ATMs, there are plenty of currency-exchange-shops. Try the airport or main touristic areas like Sagrada Familia, La Rambla, or similar, to get yourself some cash. Another option would be to go to a bank for more security while exchanging – keep in mind that they might close around 14:00.

Note: Try not to carry too much cash and beware of pickpockets!

Siesta & Prime Time

Day- and night-time are the two different faces of Barcelona!

First of all, an all-clear signal – Barcelona is a safe place whether it’s during day or night! The only thing you need to keep an eye on – pickpockets!

During the Siesta you´re most likely busy networking at the MWC20 anyways. However, in case you’re extending your trip, keep in mind that banks, stores, restaurants, and other commerce will most likely be closed during “Siesta”. Siesta is taken seriously by Spanish people and during this time (mostly around 13:30 and 17:00 o´clock, times can vary from location to location though) almost everything will close down.

As far as we´re concerned nearly all of the tourist attractions should stay open.

A little tip by us: check the website or call if the places you want to visit are open for business. Plan a little ahead if you want to visit any stores or head out for a late business lunch during the afternoon. ?

After the Siesta, the city comes back to life. So, what should you do after your full-on day at the event and there´s no networking party planned yet?!

There´s plenty for you to do or see:

For example, visit the magic fountain, called Font Màgica by night. This magnificent ornamental fountain was constructed in 1929 for an International Exhibition. Nowadays you can watch a free light and water show accompanied by music all year round during the evening time.

While talking about sightseeing, why not go and see the sights lit up after sunset? Even though the most symbolic sights of Barcelona are already stunning during the day, it has something magical when they all are covered in the golden light.

If sightseeing or doing more walking around after a long day at the conference is not what you´re looking for, we have a couple more suggestions for you:

  1. Get a drink at the oldest cocktail bar called Boadas Cocktails in the metropolitan

It is easily accessible and is centered just around the corner from the Ramblas. When entering you´ll discover skillfully crafted cocktails made for serious drinkers ? If you are unsure what to drink, just let their barkeepers find the perfect one for you! You will not be disappointed!

  1. Another “must try” is the greatest Martini in town.

Appreciate the exquisite surroundings that will make you feel you’ve ventured into a James Bond motion picture. In spite of the fact that there are numerous fantastic bars in Barcelona, few can match “Dry Martini”. It´s a bar where over a million martinis have been made. They’re perceived to be the best bar in Europe and have gotten on the rundown of the World’s 50 Best Bars for a long time running.

Do you prefer drinks with a view instead?! We recommend you head to one of the many rooftop bars. Most of them can be found in Barcelona’s most luxurious hotels. The best part, you don´t even have to be a guest to visit the bar and treat yourself!

  1. Try out Rooftop Ohla Barcelona, Hotel Barceló Raval (360°), the Sky Bar at Grand Hotel Central, or La Isabela (Hotel 1898).

These were just a couple of tips to get you inspired but there is so much more to do in Barcelona than what has been mentioned above. And of course, don´t forget to try out a Tapas and wine tasting tour …

Where to look for Accommodation

Are you still looking for accommodation for your business trip to Barcelona?

Here are some recommendations of Hotels for you that also offer meeting rooms you can use during your stay (if needed):

  1. The Crowne Plaza Barcelona (in the Fira Center)

The location is very close to key convention centers and puts Barcelona at your feet.

  1. Renaissance Barcelona Fira Hotel

This hotel is located closer to the airport, giving you easy access to and from your flight.

  1. NH Collection Barcelona Constanza

This hotel was built recently in the heart of Barcelona’s financial and business district.

Are you more the premium hotel kinda business person?

No problem, here´s a list to either impress your prospect or to simply blend business and pleasure together:

  1. Grand Hotel Central
  2. Mandarin Oriental Barcelona
  3. OD Barcelona
  4. Le Méridien Barcelona

A good alternative to booking a hotel is to use Airbnb. It offers you a large scale of apartments to rent.

A free transportation pass is included with your MWC badge. The free pass covers unlimited Metro and FGC train rides ONLY during the conference days plus one fare to the Barcelona airport.

Public transport is an easy and cheap way to travel during those days but Uber or Taxi are good and easy options to use when you´re in a rush.

Are you wondering about the best restaurants in Barcelona for dining with clients or business meetings in general?

We prepared a list for you but it was a tough job as there are so many amazing and delicious places to dine in the city!

And of course, you can’t leave Barcelona without having tried paella and tapas.

Finding a decent paella isn’t simple. For anyone who is new to Barcelona, here are a few tips to consider:

  • Try to keep in mind that it’s problematic, if not unfeasible, to get a decent paella anyplace near the Ramblas or Sagrada Familia, except if you have a local source who’s suggested a particular spot
  • Absolutely never go to wherever a photograph of paella has been placed on a menu outside
  • Absolutely never go to a spot where there’s a person outside revealing to you that they have paella
  • Paella is ideally lunch, not supper
  • Book ahead of time, it tends to be hard to get a table without a reservation

PRO TIP for amazing tapas & paella:

Another PRO TIP: Catalonians have their dinners late. Restaurants might be full of tourists in the early hours of the evening, but locals take over at around 10 PM. Join around this time for a quieter and less touristy experience.

Some Useful Phrases & Tips

In Barcelona, you will find three languages being spoken.

The first one is Spanish (what a surprise!), the second is Catalan (which is a local and the official language spoken in this area) and third, for your liking, English (mostly in the touristic locations)!

Don’t worry when you´re outside the tourist areas, we prepared some useful phrases for your trip:

First some basics:

Hi – ¡Hola!

Good morning – ¡Buenos días!

Good afternoon – ¡Buenas tardes!

Good evening – ¡Buenas noches!

Please – Por favor

Thank you – Gracias

How are you? – ¿Cómo está?

Good, thank you – Bien, gracias

Nice to meet you – Mucho gusto

Do you speak English? – ¿Habla inglés?

And not to forget, helpful phrases for when you´re dining:

A table – Una mesa

A table for two/three/four, please – Una mesa para dos/tres/ cuatro, por favor

A menu – Un menú

Red wine/ white wine – vino tinto/vino blanco

Beer – cerveza

When calling a waiter or waitress – ¡Señor! or ¡Señorita!

The check, please – La cuenta, por favor

Another note on theft

Barcelona has many pickpockets and they are a real concern in the city, we won´t deny that. They aren’t frightening; however, they are smart. While trading cash or getting some at an ATM, be extra cautious about your surroundings and store your money in a safe spot.

Tips that prevent you from looking like a target:

  • Don’t leave your belongings on the table when you go to the restroom or even when you’re sitting at a table
  • Be extra cautious in packed spaces (and try to keep your hands on your pockets)
  • Don’t carry any valuables with you – only what’s REALLY necessary
  • Don’t withdraw money in jam-packed places or wave money around

Sounds easy right?! It is, just don’t get distracted. ?

In case of Emergency

Hopefully, this section won´t be needed but just in case:

  • Police, ambulance & fire brigade: 112
  • Barcelona lost (or stolen) property office: 010 or +34 807 117 700
  • Barring credit cards
    • Service and emergency center for Mastercard and VISA:
      • MasterCard: 001 – 63 67 22 71 11
      • Visa: 001 – 410 581 3836
    • Visa Card: In Spain: 900-99-1124
  • If any English-speaking doctors are needed, please ask at the reception of your hotel or at your consulate
